Separating First & Last Names in Google Sheets
When faced with a column filled with combined first and last names, your instinct might be to manually separate them one by one. However, Google Sheets offers a much simpler solution. Follow these steps to split the text effortlessly:
- Select the Column: Begin by clicking on the column containing the combined names.
- Data & Split Text: Next, navigate to the 'Data' menu and select 'Split text to columns.'
- Customize Your Splitting: A pop-up window will appear at the bottom section. By default, Google Sheets will attempt to 'Detect automatically,' which usually works well. If needed, you can specify the delimiter to split the names, such as a space or a custom character.
- Finalize the Split: Once you've made your selection, click 'Split,' and voila! Your combined names will now be neatly separated into individual columns.

To split text in our Google sheet, if we scraped first names and last names together, we can click on the column and then select data and then select split text to columns. And we'll see this little pop up show up in the bottom section here. Detect automatically will likely work in cases like this, but we can click this dropdown and specify it's going to be a space or enter a custom one.
If this isn't what we're looking at. Click that, and then we'll see those options get split for us. So sometimes when you're scraping an automation, you may not be able to scrape it with it separated, but you can move that data to your Google Sheets, and then you can do some actions in your Google Sheet so that it's ready for another automation, or it's, uh, ready for its final version.
